There are many elements that make up the study of SEO. Each element is an important gear to your SEO engine, but there is one important factor that has one of the highest returns-keyword searching. A keyword is a word or phrase that is of significance to your industry and company.

Keywords are essential; they are the foundation of your website’s content. The words and phrases will be used as the topic of discussion on each page found within your website. This helps visitors and potential customers understand the purpose of your pages.

The phrases also play a crucial role in helping search engines understand the purpose of your site’s pages. When a search engine crawls to view the content of your website it looks for these words to index them and determine their value in upcoming searches.

How do you come up with your initial list of keywords?

What products/services do you offer?

Begin by simply writing down a list of products and services you offer to your leads and customers. If you have enough products and services, begin organizing each services in different categories and subcategories.

Focus on long tail words vs. broad keywords.

Long tail keywords are specific keyword phrases that have at least three words in the phrase. On special occasions long tail keywords can have up to five words. These keywords are used when the website wants to refine key terms to web pages.

 How would you describe your business to someone that has never heard of your company?

Potential customers might not know all of your industry’s keywords. This makes their personal searches limited due to not knowing which phrase to type.  They will instead use keywords that are familiar to them. Ask close customers what words they would use if they did a web search on your industry.

What common questions do your prospects ask you?

Answering your lead’s most common questions in your blog posts is a great way to produce quality content. Where do you find these questions? A great place to start is with your sales team.

Have them write down the most frequently asked questions and compile them. Once you’ve identified what these questions are, create a list of keywords that match all the different ways these questions have been asked.

There are many different methods you can use to focus on keyword searches. Regardless of the method you use, think about keywords in terms of concepts and themes.
