As a child there was nothing better than curling up in your father’s lap and hearing a good story. As an adult, your love for story telling still burns deep. You’ll never forget the glass slipper, the magic lamp or the yellow brick road. Stories have a way of grabbing your attention and staying in your heart forever.

Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to breathe life into your brand. Give your audience and followers something to connect with by producing stories within your business.  As a business owner you probably didn’t plan on becoming a storyteller, but with these 4 easy tips you might become the next Shakespeare!

Your Story Is NOT About You!

Great stories always involve others. Do not fall into the trap of being self-centered and egotistical. Businesses that focus on themselves squash the potential growth of their company. Be brave and allow others to write and define your brand and culture. Sending this simple invite gives your customers the ability to emotionally connect with your product and services.

Use Stories to Start Conversations

Cut through the social media noise by starting conversations with your customers. Don’t use just any subject to start a conversation. Dig deep and find topics that have personal value to your customers. Think about it, people are more faithful and reliable with those whom they’ve created strong relationships. As you connect through common interests you will slowly gain credibility.

Use Stories to Connect Emotionally

It’s a myth to say that all good content is actual storytelling. Sometimes content has to be strictly informational. Remember what was stated before; good story telling is not directly tied to your brand. It’s all about the emotion; so be raw and authentic. Whether it’s your written word or images- these elements must be linked together with the needs and emotions of your customers. Study your client to see what pulls their hearts strings and brings their true passion to the surface. The better understanding you have of your client, the easier your story writing becomes.

The Fourth Act

Great novel writers such as Shakespeare, Dr. Seuss, and J. K. Rowling are all masters in writing a three-act story. For storytellers like yourself, you’ll have to use the same outline, but with one addition. The fourth element is unique because it is a call to action.  The call to action is often subtle and indirect. Your goal as a storyteller is to inspire, encourage change and motivate the buying of a product. The whole focus of your story needs to be centered on the outcome. This concentration drives the direction and purpose of the story.
