“We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.” –Woodrow Wilson
Do you have dreams for your business? Of course you do—every business owner does. But how do you treat your dreams? Do you toss them into the trash as you wake up every morning? If you do, you are not alone. Far too many business owners and people in general are too quick to give up on their dreams. This is a tragedy, because as we have discussed elsewhere, even seemingly impossible dreams can often be accomplished if you believe in yourself.
Nothing I have written so far is new. We have all heard, since childhood, that if we can dream it, we can achieve it. But that is not entirely true. Here is the truth: If you can dream it, and if you can create a strategy and a system that works, you can achieve it. Simply having the dream is not enough to ensure success—you have to be willing to do the work of implementing your dream.
Many people are “dreamers.” Many more are “doers.” But it is only the relatively few individuals who can combine their dreams with the systems needed to execute them that find true success.
As a business owner, you almost certainly have the ability to be a “doer.” You understand how to make things happen. You deal with details on a daily basis, and you recognize the importance of taking decisive action. That puts you ahead of many people.
In addition, the fact that you started your own business indicates that you have at least an inkling of a dreamer inside of you. You could have spent your life working for someone else, but you did not. You had a dream, and you acted on it.
But over the years, if you are like most business owners, you have stopped dreaming. Your business life is about practical action. And while that focus may help you to get through each day efficiently, your lack of a big dream is holding you back from reaching your true potential.
Don’t be afraid to dream!
